India remains a hotspot for competition in the entry level as more and more OEMs attempt to attract customers in the budget segment. For the most part, a budget device in 2017 can serve the needs of the casual or mainstream consumer, leaving many customers wondering if they really should be spending exorbitant amounts on smartphones that would be marginally better for their limited needs. Such customers are the perfect target for phones like the Lenovo K8 Note.
Lenovo, along with other Chinese and domestic OEMs, recognizes this need of the Indian market. In addition to several devices under the Moto sub-brand, Lenovo is also targeting this market with its own K-series sub-brand. The newest entrant is the Lenovo K8 Note, a device that tries to compete against the likes of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 for a place in the market.
The basic look of the Lenovo K8 Note appears to be similar to that of the Redmi Note 4, except with the addition of new features like the dual rear camera setup, the front flash and an additional hardware button. The front of the device is dominated by the 5.5″ FHD IPS LCD, while the back of the device is immediately recognizable by the rear camera assembly.
On the inside, the Lenovo K8 Note features the deca-core MediaTek Helio X23 with the performance cluster clocked in at 2.3GHz. There are two storage and RAM variants of the device: the base 3GB + 32GB storage variant and the 4GB + 64GB storage variant. The phone also has support for microSD cards through a dedicated slot, and it also supports dual-SIM cards simultaneously with the microSD card as it does not utilize a hybrid-slot. There is a beefy 4,000 mAh battery on the phone, with support for 15W fast charging. Perhaps the most appreciated aspect of this phone for many would be Lenovo’s decision to forego its custom UX skin in favor of stock Android. The Lenovo K8 Note ships with stock Android 7.1.1 Nougat.
On the camera front, the Lenovo K8 Note rocks a 13MP + 5MP rear camera setup to allow for depth-sensing capabilities. The front camera is a 13MP shooter with its own LED flash. The extra button on the device is referred to as the Music key, so we remain unsure if this could be remapped to act as a physical shutter button.
The Lenovo K8 Note will be available for purchase from August 18 in India. The device is an Amazon.in exclusive, so interested buyers would have to register on the website ahead of the sale. The base variant of the device costs ₹12,999 ($205) while the 4GB RAM variant will cost you ₹13,999 ($220). The phone does directly compete against the 4GB RAM variant of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 (priced at ₹12,999), but it packs plenty of extra features to help sway over users. Lenovo’s decision to adopt stock Android would also be a very welcome move indeed for users who do not wish to go for Xiaomi’s heavy MIUI UX. Perhaps it’s time for Xiaomi to consider something similar?
